LANGKAWI – Sixteen houses were destroyed and another damaged in a fire at the immigrants settlement in Bukit Malut. However, no one was injured in the 6pm incident.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon said firefighters from the Langkawi and Persiaran Putra stations were despatched to the scene upon receiving a distress call about 6.47pm.

She said 15 houses were 95 per cent damaged. Another house was 80 per cent destroyed, while the 17th house was partially damaged.

“We took about an hour to control the fire and we finally put out the blaze at 10.47pm,” she said in a statement.

Sayani said investigations were underway to determine the cause of fire. For the record, the Bukit Malut settlement was opened by Myanmar refugees in the 1980s.
