KOTA BHARU – All agencies in Kelantan are to be on standby mode for another wave of floods which might happen this weekend.

Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the agencies are also told to step up their preparations as the latest weather forecast stated that the second wave is most likely bigger than what happened in Selangor.

“All agencies are ready for the eventuality of wave and their preparation is more than the previous time,” he told reporters after state executive council meeting here, today.

Amar said almost every year flood hit the state in Kelantan.

“Each year, a special committee is set up at state-level to handle the disaster. Apart from providing food supplies, this committee also identified the front bases in all districts.

He added, “Certain amount has been allocated for the purpose every year and this includes for the second wave of floods.”

The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) today has predicted floods to happen in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor later this week following the continuous rain warnings by the Malaysian Meteorological Department on Dec 28.

In Kelantan, it is expected that a flood will happen starting 8pm on Dec 31, at Sungai Kelantan and Sungai Golok.

The floods would likely involve several districts near Sungai Kelantan namely Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Jeli, Tanah Merah and Machang as well as the surrounding areas.

It also predicted that districts close to Sungai Golok such as Tanah Merah (Jenob) and Pasir Mas (Rantau Panjang) as well as the surrounding areas were at risk of flooding.
