NIBONG TEBAL –  Residents from Ladang Byram and Kampung Kebun Baru, who have been told to evacuate temporarily following air pollution from the fire at the Pulau Burung landfill last Wednesday, do not have to worry about the safety of their homes.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the personnel on duty, the Motorcycle Patrol Unit and the Seberang Prai Selatan district Patrol Car Unit (MPV) would conduct regular patrols in the affected areas.

He said, “Residents who have been instructed to move to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) do not have to worry about their homes as we will conduct regular patrols in the affected areas.”

“This is to ensure the safety of the residents’ houses and that nothing untoward happens,” he said in a statement on the Penang PDRM Facebook page, yesterday.

Mohd Shuhaily had visited the site of the fire at the Pulau Burung landfill, here.

The New Straits Times reported yesterday that almost all 400 people from 86 families in both villages have agreed to move out temporarily.

They said the directive had to be complied with for their own safety as the air in their residential areas was confirmed to be polluted and dangerous.

They claimed that the latest fire incident was the worst, which prompted the evacuation order.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shuhaily advised the public, especially nearby residents, not to carry out any open burning activities.

“Don’t conduct open burning on purpose. If we detect such activities, those responsible can be prosecuted. Obey the law if you don’t want stern action to be taken,” he said.
