Caulirice – Switch to A Healthier Option

We now know that white rice should be eaten in moderation. For some, an alternative to white rice is always a better option when it comes to preparing meals.

Cauliflower rice, or more affectionately called caulirice by Cauli and Rice, now stands as a grain-free, low carb alternative to regular white rice.

Caulirice is made entirely of cauliflower. Caulirice a healthier option for diabetics and those looking to make a charge in their diet.

With the rising number of diabetics in Malaysia (1 in 5), people should switch to healthier options.

Cauli and Rice co-founder, Kenneth Lai Kar Mun said Cauli and Rice aims to be part of the solution by making caulirice mainstream in Malaysia.

Caulirice has about 80 per cent lower carbohydrates and calories compared to normal white rice.

It’s snowy white appearance does resemble normal rice. Caulirice with health benefits starting to have a place on dinner tables.

Lai says to make it more acceptable for Malaysians, the seven flavours of caulirice served in Cauli and Rice are those Malaysians are familiar with, like belacan, tom yam and curry among others.

Cauliflower is cruciferous vegetable. This means it’s a great source of folate, vitamin K, fibre and is also high in protein.

Cauliflower also contains raffinose, which is naturally occurring in plants. However, it can cause bloating and gas in some people.

Most people can handle cruciferous vegetables in moderate amounts, but those with irritable bowel syndrome may experience more digestive distress.

“There is a rise in consumers opting for cauliflower rice. We always encourage customers to order a bowl of caulirice with other ingredients, like protein or non-cruciferous vegetables such as mushrooms, for a more balanced diet,” says Lai.

He added that the company also recently launched a hybrid bowl with 50 per cent caulirice and 50 per cent white rice.

Making Cauliflower Rice 

Making cauliflower rice at home is extremely simple. Just trim cauliflower florets and blend them in a food processor to the size you prefer.

The focus should be on the floret. You need to remove the tougher stem in the middle and dark spots on the florets. Prepare it the way you prefer by either steaming or stir frying it.
