KUALA LUMPUR – The army has been sent to different flood-hit areas to help with the evacuation of flood victims, especially women, children and the elderly.
Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said army and assets from the 11th and 2nd Brigade were among those on the ground since afternoon to help flood victims in Selangor, in particular Klang, Sepang, Damansara and Bukit Lanchong.
“The army is working eagerly to help evacuate flood victims in Meru, Klang and Klang Panglima to temporary evacuation centres. The priority are given to women, the elderly and children,” he wrote on his Facebook page tonight.
“The army is also preparing to expand aid operations in areas where the situation could worsen.
“In this flood situations, the army is frontlines to help the people. I will ensure that even more personnel and assets are deployed and given according to the situation and need,” he said.
Hishammudin advised people to be on alert and look out for their own safety.
“Stay away from flood areas. Make sure move quickly to flood relief centres when instructed to and keep follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) when at the centres.
“Let us together pray for this situation to improve,” he said.
Major parts of the Klang Valley were hit by floods following incessant rain since Saturday morning. Roads to Shah Alam and Klang have for the most part been cut off due to rising flood waters.
Reports have also come in of motorists stranded in their vehicles along highways after their routes were submerged.
