KUANTAN – The body of a man, who was reported missing after the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) he was travelling in with a friend was swept away by floodwaters towards a river in Kampung Cempaka near here, was found today.

The remains of car driver, Mohd Halmi Nazlan, 34, from Kampung Kuala Pahang was recovered about 5km from the spot he  was last seen at 7.15am.

A Fire and Rescue department spokesman said the search and rescue team members along with some villagers spotted the remains washed up on Pantai Kampung Cempaka.

“The department’s Water Rescue Team (PPDA) had searched along the river where he was last seen and later recovered the sunken car yesterday but the victim was not inside the vehicle.

“His remains were found close to the beach today and the body has been given to the police,” he said in a statement.

In the 1am incident yesterday, Halmi was reported missing while his friend Muhammad Amirul, 23, managed to swim to safety.

The duo were travelling from Kuantan towards Pekan along the Jalan Kampung Cempaka-Sungai Soi bypass stretch when Halmi attempted to drive through the ragging floodwaters.

His vehicle was pushed by strong currents towards the road shoulder before it entered Sungai Cempaka.

Amirul managed to break the car window before swimming towards the riverbank and was rescued by villagers.
