KUALA LUMPUR – Reducing fatalities from road accidents involving youths is one of the main challenges faced by enforcement authorities in the country.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said youths were the highest casualties in road accidents cases reported from 2019 until last year.

Almost half or 7,077 fatalities of the total 14,308 deaths due to road accidents reported during the said period, he said, involved this group.

The prime minister also said the significant development in the transportation sector had helped to place the country on the right track towards economic recovery post Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that Malaysia had formulated the National Transportation Policy 2019-2030 to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable development that would help to transform the country into a high-income nation.

“The transportation sector is the main catalyst in the country’s socio-economic development, in which, the efficiency of the transportation sector is closely linked to the economic growth as well as trade activities.

On the BLKM, the prime minister hoped that the initiative by the government through the Road Transport Department could benefit the people especially those from the B40 household and help the group to increase their household income.

He said 404 people from the Orang Asli community had obtained B2 motorcycle license after fulfilling the necessary criteria under the BLKM initiative.

By obtaining the B2 motorcycle license, he said it could help to increase the chances among the people to secure employment and later contribute to the economic growth and strengthening the employment workforce in the country.

“I hope all those who benefited from BLKM will be a responsible and discipline road user by adhering to all the guidelines and laws which will protect them from any untoward incidents such as road accidents,” he said.
