States can announce and carry out their own Covid-19 walk-in vaccination programmes for senior citizens, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

He said the states have been given the authority to decide and no longer have to wait for permission from the federal Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

“The announcement will be made by state CITFs regarding the walk-in for the elderly, but on policy, the federal CITF decided that states can start walk-in initiative for the elderly, for those who are yet to get their first vaccination dose and we leave it to the states to announce the dates and which PPVs will accept walk-ins for the elderly.

“We have handed and given the power to the state CITFs to execute and announce about the initiative,” the coordinating minister for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme said in a news conference this afternoon.

PPVs are the Malay initials for vaccination centres.

Khairy said the CITF decided to expand the walk-in concept for those aged 60 and above nationwide from next week as 95 per cent of of the age demographic group had already been vaccinated at the national level,

The walk-in initiative was first announced for senior citizens in the Klang Valley on July 16.
