A man, believed to be mentally retarded, was rescued by firemen when he fell into a well at Kampung Rebana here last night.
Prior to the fall, the 43-year-old man was said to have set himself on fire, causing him to suffer minor burns all over his body.
Family members contacted the authorities for help.
Machang Fire and Rescue station chief Nik Ahmad Afsham Nik Pa said the department received a call on the incident at 9.30pm and deployed six firemen to the scene.
“The man was in the three-metre deep well when the firemen arrived at the area.
“We tried to persuade him out but he refused to cooperate,” he said.
The man, Nik Ahmad said had put up a struggle but the firemen later managed to bring him out to safety.
“It took our men almost 45 minutes to rescue him.
“The man who was slightly injured, was later sent to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he said.
