Man Speeds Off As Police Give Chase

MANJUNG – Police opened fire at a car when the driver tried to crash into them in Ayer Tawar here, today.

A 61-year-old driver, his 38-year-old wife and their two-year-old child were arrested in the 4pm incident.

Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the incident occurred when the police team patrolling the area spotted a suspicious-looking car passing by the road in Ayer Tawar.

“The team ordered the driver to stop but the man turned aggressive and hit the front part of the police vehicle.

“The team then fired several shots at the tyres to stop the car from speeding off. However, the car driver continues to drive on at high speed,” he said when contacted today.

Mior Faridalathrash said the team gave chase about 800 meters and finally managed to stop and apprehend the man and his family near Taman Jasmin here.

“Further inspection in the car, police found 33 packets of drugs believed to be syabu weighing 62.5 grams.

“No injuries were reported among the car occupants and the police during the incident,” he said, adding that the man had previous criminal records including drug-related offences.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempt to murder and Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for trafficking in dangerous drugs.
