KOTA BHARU – Ramadan bazaars in the town area will be allowed this year with the enforcement of the existing Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB) president Tuan Zainal Abidin Tuan Yusuf said applications to operate in the bazaars were opened to traders recently. He said the matter was being handled by the council’s licensing unit.

“MPKB will allow Ramadan bazaars to be held in the areas under our jurisdiction this year and I was informed that lessors involved have already taken the deposits from the traders.

“But the lessors should be responsible or pay back the deposits to the traders if the state government decides to cancel the Ramadan bazaars at the last minute for security reasons,” he said.

More than 30 Ramadan bazaars were normally set up under MPKB during the fasting month and the main bazaar would be at the Sultan Muhammad IV stadium in Kota Bharu.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said there would be no restrictions imposed on economic activities this year including Ramadan bazaars.

However, he said a more refined standard operating procedure would be set for Ramadan bazaars which would be announced at a later date.

In 2020, Ramadan bazaars were not allowed nationwide, while last year, the bazaars were only prohibited in the enhanced movement control order areas.
