KUALA LUMPUR – Tesla’s Model Y pricing for Malaysia has been revealed a week ahead of the brand’s official launch set on July 20.
Checks through the recently activated Tesla configurator for Malaysia has the fully electric mid-size sports utility vehicle’s (e-SUV) price listed starting from RM199,000.
The listing is sure to shock the local electric vehicle (EV) market, being listed below estimates by RM50,000 to RM100,000 (standard range model).
The pricing also makes Malaysia the most affordable place to own a Model Y in the region after conversion.
For comparison, the standard range Model Y in Thailand is priced at 1,959,000 baht (RM256,149) and SGD 87,990 (RM301,687) in Singapore.
Locally, it comes in three base specification packages: Y Rear-wheel drive (RWD) at RM199,000, Long Range All-wheel drive (AWD) at RM246,000, and the top spec Performance AWD at RM288,000.
Y RWD is the standard model which has a recorded 0-100 kph of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 kph. Its claimed maximum range is at 455 km (WLTP).
The Long Range AWD has an increased distance threshold at 533 km. It shares the same top speed with the standard RWD but is a bit faster with a century sprint of 5 seconds.
At the top sits the Performance AWD which comes with 21 inch Uberturbine wheels, performance brakes, a carbon fibre spoiler, aluminium alloy pedal and a lowered suspension. It can achieve a 0-100kph in 3.7 seconds, has a top speed of 250kph, and a range of up to 514 km.
All variants come in Pearl White Multi-Coat body colour and an all black interior. Currently, seating configuration is listed at two-row for five persons with no mention of a three-row seven seater upgrade (available in certain countries).
Standard features include panoramic glass roof, a 15-inch centre touch display, dual wireless charger, four USB C ports, a 13 speaker premium audio system, power adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering, and the air conditioning has a HEPA filter system with Bioweapon Defence Mode.
Storage is listed at 854-litre for the rear boot and 117-litre under the front bonnet.
Additional colour options and specific features are available as add-ons for customers at an additional fee.
The Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic, and Deep Blue Metallic body paint is priced at RM5,000 while the Red Multi-Coat comes at a RM10,000 premium. A dual-tone black and white interior option comes at RM5,000.
A 20-inch Induction wheel upgrade from the standard 19-inch Gemini wheels costs RM10,000.
Embracing the full Tesla experience with the Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self Driving features will set you back an additional RM16,000 and RM32,000 respectively.
Dubbed as one of the safest SUVs in the world, attaining a full 5-star rating from both NHTSA and Euro NCAP, the Tesla Model Y is covered by a Basic Vehicle Warranty which is 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first. There is also a Battery & Drive Unit Warranty which is much longer – 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, with minimum 70 per cent retention of battery capacity over the warranty period.
Those interested can make their booking at the Malaysian configurator site at https://www.tesla.com/en_my for a non-refundable RM1,000 fee. Delivery is expected to be in early 2024.
At present there are no details on the Model 3 sedan other than its listed availability.
